Since Real Madrid lifted the first European Cup in 1956, 24 different clubs from 10 countries have been crowned champions of Europe — a lineage that runs from Di Stéfano's Madrid through Cruyff's Ajax, Sacchi's Milan and Guardiola's Barcelona, to a modern era in which PSG retained the trophy in 2026, becoming the first French club ever to win it in back-to-back seasons.
European Cup, Champions League — One Trophy, Two Names
The competition ran as the European Cup — a straight knockout between domestic champions only — from 1956 to 1992. Real Madrid's five consecutive titles between 1956 and 1960 remain the foundation of the entire competition's history. The 1992/93 season brought a rebrand to the Champions League, a group stage, and eventually multiple entrants per country — the format that has produced every winner since Marseille's controversial 1993 triumph.
The all-time list above is dominated, as it always has been, by Real Madrid — their record of 15 titles is not seriously threatened by any active club. But the country breakdown tells its own story: Spain's total rests almost entirely on two clubs, while England's has been built by six different winners — the widest spread of champions of any nation in the competition's history.
